Institutional Triggering is a proven methodology for convincing senior- level decision-makers and WASH sector leaders about the strength and efficacy of the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach. It also helps in breaking the traditional perspectives and myths regarding unwillingness, inability or lack of initiative of the poor to improve their own sanitation situation and liberate themselves from the drudgery and pangs of life through self-mobilization. If applied systematically, successful institutional triggering facilitates the process of enhancing the much-needed sanitation policy change at the national level which fast-tracks the spread and scaling-up of CLTS towards attaining the status of a respectable nation. “Sanitation is one of the most pressing global challenges that the world faces today.

Despite significant advancements in coverage since the 1990s, a vast proportion of the global population still lacks access to safe sanitation. Almost 2.3 billion people still do not have access to sanitation and 892 million still defecate in the open. In several cities of the global South, ‘unplanned’ urbanisation has brought rapid and sporadic growth; however, many people still suffer from inadequate and poor access to sanitation, a problem that is projected to become more severe in the coming decades. We urgently need to develop innovative ways to create solutions to the growing sanitation crisis…….”

CLTS Rapid Appraisal Protocol (CRAP)

CLTS Rapid Appraisal Protocol (CRAP) is a diagnostic tool to review the quality and effectiveness of CLTS programme in the country. The participants include a diverse range of stakeholders at the national, sub-national (region or district) and community levels, engaged in participatory appraisal process of the national CLTS programme including action plans to scale-up CLTS across the country.

CRAP is an excellent tool that can prove handy to sanitation practitioners, policy decision makers from the government, non-governmental organisations, bilateral and multilateral agencies, researchers, academicians and anyone interested and engaged in scaling-up to achieve sustained outcomes would find this guide useful.

Impact of Community Led Total Sanitation on- Women’s Health in Urban Slums A Case Study from Kalyani Municipality

This Evidence Report seeks to understand the health and other impacts of slum women’s access to sanitation through the Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach. It also examines the process through which open defecation free (ODF) status was attained in two different slum colonies, the resulting health impacts and the collective action that took place around both sanitation and other development benefits. The study was conducted in the slums of Kalyani, a Municipality town located 55km north of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal state in India. From an area plagued with rampant open defecation, the slums of Kalyani were transformed into the first ODF town in India in 2009.
